It depicts the harvest of Taro plants in the Hanalei Valley on the north shore of Kauai. These plants have a purple, starchy, potato-like root which is mashed to make poi...the primary Polynesian staple food.
The mountains in the background are most often shrouded in rain clouds and mist, which produce an endless supply of fresh water to the Hanalei River...and a source of irrigation for these water-loving plants.
